We visited the Gorge in January 2021 but floods closed the park after day two. So we were very keen to return to experience more of this incredible place.
The Route
We went up via Biloela and then across to Rolleston and down to the Gorge. Stayed at Sandstone Park on the ridge which was just beautiful, lots of space and 360degree views from the camp site. A little windy at times but did not bother us. No facilities which also did not bother us.

Carnarvon Gorge
Carried lots of water with us for all of the treks. Probably 5 litres each. Snake bite and first aid kit. Garmin Inreach satellite (epirb) and text communicator, with treks loaded. Energy bars and food. Headed out for walks at sunrise.

In January we had visited the rock pool, clematis ridge, mickey creek, moss garden, amphitheatre (awesome) and the art gallery (so spiritual). So this time our goals were:
Big Bend (20+km trek)
The Cathedral
Boolimba Bluff
Wards Canyon
Big Bend - the trek
Wow what a hike. Lost count of the number of creek crossings. Nothing dramatic as all had stepping stones and water levels were down unlike January. But carried 2 days provisions just in case weather hit PLUS of course our trusty Garmin In-Reach (satellite navigation, EPIRB and text messages).
The trek up the Gorge is rick in flora and fauna. Everywhere you look there is something of interest. This is just a very special place.
The Catheral
Very similar to the Art Gallery EXCEPT it is right on the main track. Again a very spiritual place.
The videos do The Cathedral more justice.
The Big Bend
Long walk but enjoyed every metre. But finally arrived.
Wards Canyon
We visited Wards Canyon on the way back from Big Bend. In our opinion it is the most spectacular of all of the Canyons in the Gorge.
That completed our first day trek up to Big Bend and back via Wards. Fabulous. But definitely time for a cold beer or five.
Boolimba Bluff
LOTS OF CLIMBING in this one so headed out at sunrise.
And the photos.
Helicopter Ridge over the Gorge
We took the 45minute flight which headed East and then back over the Gorge and surrounds. Definitely worth doing. The Gorge is just a SMALL PART of an extensive network within the National Park. Many areas are not accessible. Pure wilderness.
Sandstone Park
We chose Sandstone Park rather than Tikkarakka where we stayed last time. Tikkarakka was great. But for Theresa and I who prefer somewhere more remote with a view Sandstone Park was ideal. For those in need of 5 star there is a wilderness lodge just inside the park which is A.mazing!
We visited the cafe on our way back our walks to rebuild the carbs with French pastries and coffee!
And the sunsets .....
On the way back we stayed in Chinchilla
On our NT trip we decided to stop off for a night's rest. Found Clover Hill Camping on HIPCAMP and were just thrilled with its private location despite being "in town". The owners run Cattle properties (and Horses) with Clover Hill being an adjunct to their successful properties.
Fabulous place so we decided to return.
And on our South Australia trip in early 2022 this is our last stop for 2 nights to prepare ourselves for a return to the real world!
