Weights, Torque and Tyre Pressures

KG, NM and PSA. Weights, Torque and Tyres Pressures are something it has taken 12 months to get my head around. Lots of reading. Lots of asking questions. Lots of research.

AND a van wheel coming off!!!

Weights

We used Weigh2Go in Brisbane (thanks Wayne!) and also the GoWeigh weighbridge over at Murrarie.

Weighed

  • Van and Triton alone not attached

  • Van and Triton hitched no WDV

  • Van and Triton hitched with WDV

The Hayman Reece WDV makes a significant difference. Well worth the expense.

Only issue we have is rear axle with Van attached and WDV being 100kg over. Without we are 320kg under. So shifted some items around to get under.

GVM, GTM, TBD, ATM, GCM all well under maximums.

Took us 12 months to get there!

Torque

Having lost a van wheel this led to much research into Torque settings on wheel nuts for both the Triton and Van.

Triton 21mm wheel nuts (Mitsubishi)

           92 ft/lbs

           123nm

Van    19mm wheel nuts (Goldstream)

           110 ft/lbs

           149nm

Hitch  190nm (Hayman Reece)

We use a Torque Wrench before we head off. On the Triton we use Wheel Nut Markers. On the Van we use a Paint marker.

We check at 100km.

WARNING: Tyre Pressure Monitoring systems do NOT alert you when a wheel comes off!!!

Here's a really god article

Tyres Pressures

On the Triton we have Cooper LT265/60R18 116S AT3 tyres. We carry 2xspares.

Cold pressures:

Front: 32psi

Rear: 38psi

When travelling PSI increases 4-6psi

On the Van we have Cooper LT265/75R16 123/120R AT3 tyres. We carry 1xspare.

Cold Pressure: 36psi

When travelling PSI increases 4-8psi

Max pressure 58psi cold

Cooper Tyres offer sensational advice (their rep ins Brisbane was awesome). Plus great links:
